TADs

Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)

Temporary anchorage devices, commonly referred to as TADs, are small titanium anchors used in certain orthodontic cases to help achieve faster and more efficient tooth movement. TADs may be used in combination with braces or as an alternative to traditional headgear.

How Are TADs Placed?

Before placing a TAD, a strong anesthetic is used to numb the gum tissue and the jaw in the area where the device will be inserted. Once the area is numb, your doctor will gently place the TAD through the gum tissue and securely into the jawbone.

The placement process is quick and often completed before you realize it. You may feel slight pressure during placement, but discomfort is minimal. Within a day, most patients are no longer aware of the TAD.

TADs are removed once treatment is complete or when they are no longer needed to assist with tooth movement. Removal is a simple and comfortable procedure that typically takes only a few minutes.

Relieving Discomfort From a TAD

If you experience any discomfort after TAD placement, Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) is recommended to help relieve pain. If discomfort continues for several days after placement, please contact our office as soon as possible.

How to Care for Your TAD

TADs are cared for in much the same way as braces. Brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep the area clean and free of bacteria.

When your TAD is placed, we will also provide you with an antimicrobial mouthwash. This mouthwash should be used twice daily to help maintain proper oral hygiene around the TAD.
