Palatal Expander

Palatal Expander Instructions

A palatal expander is used to expand, or widen, the upper jaw and open the nasal airway by applying gentle pressure to the upper molars each time an adjustment is made. This process helps create space for proper tooth alignment and supports healthy breathing.

Once the desired expansion has been achieved, the appliance will remain in place for several months. This allows the bone to solidify and helps prevent regression.

Adjusting the Palatal Expander

Follow these instructions carefully when adjusting the palatal expander. If you have questions or concerns at any time, please contact our office.

You may also download these instructions as a printable PDF for reference.

Step 1

In a well lit area, gently tip the patient’s head back so the expander is clearly visible.

Step 2

Place the key into the hole of the expander until it is firmly seated.

Step 3

Push the key toward the back of the mouth. You will notice the fender rotate and a new hole appear. The rotation will stop when the key reaches the back of the expander.

Step 4

Press back and downward toward the tongue to remove the key. The next hole for insertion should now be visible, indicating the adjustment is complete.
